Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, the emergence of airports as gateways for their cities has turned into one of the most important architectural undertakings. Ever since the first manned flight by the Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17th 1903, utilitarian sheds next to landing strips on cow pastures evolved into a completely new building type over the next few decades – into places of Modernism as envisioned by Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright (who themselves never built an airport), to eventually turn into icons of cultural identity, progress and prosperity. Many of these airports have become architectural branding devices of their respective cities, regions and countries, created by some of the most notable contemporary architects. This interdisciplinary cultural study deals with the historical formation and transformation of the architectural typology of airports under the aspect of spatial theories. This includes the shift from early spaces of transportation such as train stations, the synesthetic effect of travel and mobility and the effects of material innovations on the development, occupation and use of such spaces. The changing uses from mere utilitarian transportation spaces to ones centered on the spectacular culture of late capitalism, consumption and identity formation in a rapidly changing global culture are analyzed with examples both from architectural and philosophical points of view. The future of airport architecture and design very much looks like the original idea of the Crystal Palace and Parisian Arcades: to provide a stage for consumption, social theatre and art exhibition.

Para-colonial, colonial, and postcolonial entanglements in South Pacific architecture. Knowledge of colonial architecture in the South Pacific remains sparse, with often-overlooked connections to para-colonial settings and postcolonial continuities. This edited volume seeks to address these gaps, focusing on the period from 1840 to 1970 across the broader South Pacific region. Through in-depth architectural case studies of buildings, ensembles and urban projects, the essays reflect on the complex interactions between locals and foreigners, colonisers and the colonised, and their shifting allegiances, even across changing political powers. With a rare focus on German colonial influences in the region, the contributions go beyond the predominant narratives of British and French colonial influence. "Drawing on the vast archival resources of its Architecture and Design Collection, the UCSB Art, Design & Architecture Museum (University of California, Santa Barbara) presents an assessment of 50 years of design by Barton Myers (b. 1934), beginning with his work in the Toronto firm A.J. Diamond and Barton Myers (1967–1975) to his own offices in Toronto and Los Angeles, Barton Myers Associates (1975–present). Myers’s strongest architectural ideas come out of the planning strategies of his early neighborhood activism in 1970s Toronto, his grounding in history, and his training in the classical traditions of site and space planning. Barton Myers is an avowed urbanist—a self-described radical in his early advocacy of old-fashioned qualities like density, mixed-use of new and re-purposed materials, and contextual planning in the late 1960s when that fundamentally conservative position was considered counter-culture. Myers’ urban manifesto was codified in “Vacant Lottery,” the title of the Design Quarterly issue co-edited by Myers and Canadian architect and educator George Baird in 1978 and which led to a renewal of interest in urban planning and offered a strategy for increasing population densities within cities while preserving the existing residential fabric. The term lived on long past the journal’s circulation cycle as both an urban infill strategy and an acknowledgment of the ceding of city planning responsibility to the “lottery” of private developers. Myers’s design practice has thus always been a social justice practice as well. Myers is also a brilliant designer of residential houses that take advantage of local landscape contexts and adaptive reuse of building materials, including steel and glass. Five essays – on urban planning, civic structures, reuse of historic buildings, single- and multi-family housing, and theaters – reinforce Myers’s commitment to urbanism and reveal his flexibility with modes of modernism. Natalie Shivers introduces the early planning work in Toronto and traces the “vacant lottery” idea of neighborhood infill to the influential Grand Avenue project in Los Angeles. Howard Shubert examines the architectural and planning strategies, and political complexities, of several civic structures in Canada and the United States. Luis Hoyos explores Myers’s additions and adaptations to historic buildings in diverse urban contexts. Lauren Bricker focuses on the use of steel and other industrial materials in Myers’s houses and analyses the neighborhood-based designs of his multi-family housing. New and cutting-edge forms of pedagogy such as distance learning, design-build, collaborative learning, and peer-to-peer practices are increasingly calling conventional teaching and learning environments, in architecture and other design disciplines, into question. Das Buch geht diesen Veränderungen erstmals systematisch aus soziologischer Perspektive und mit speziellem Blick auf die Architektur von Bibliotheken nach. How Belgium's decentralised embassy building programme highlights the collaborative nature and diplomatic significance of embassy architecture. Embassy buildings are the most tangible evidence of a state’s diplomatic presence abroad. State authorities have invested in the architectural conception of purpose-built embassies to flex their diplomatic muscle and project nationhood on foreign soil. While scholars have primarily focused on purpose-built embassies of (former) world powers, Building for Belgium shifts the perspective by scrutinising the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ embassy-building programme from 1945 to 2020. Rather than a conventional political assessment of diplomatic relations, the book foregrounds the often-overlooked architectural lives of embassies and their social, economic, and political entanglements. By examining Belgian embassy projects across all continents, it reveals how the Belgian diplomatic corps has navigated diverse political regimes, geopolitical contexts, cultures, and building codes. More than the outcome of a deliberate policy, the embassy-building programme has been shaped by incidental decisions, private ambitions and personal tastes of Belgian diplomats, ministry officials and politicians. Building for Belgium not only sheds light on diplomatic architecture but also connects domestic conversations about architecture in Belgium with global state-building projects. Offering fresh insights into the politics of space, it will be of value to scholars and practitioners in architecture, urban studies, international relations, cultural heritage, and Belgian and European studies.

The LIBER Architecture Group reflects on experience of European library building projects from the past twenty years in order to plan the next generation of library buildings. This documentation of recent library building projects accompanies the 14th Seminar of the LIBER Architecture Group, taking place in Budapest and Debrecen (Hungary) 8–12 of April 2008. Most described projects refer to scientific research libraries, however readers will find examples of an archive or public libraries in Amsterdam and Antwerp. Libraries nowadays are spaces to house information resources (and multimedia) but as well places for learning and communication. Recent design of research libraries takes this new usage into account. Therefore examples of »Learning Resource Centers« supporting students during their studies are enclosed.

In Circular Communities, pioneering, collectively supported initiatives that are aimed at closing resource cycles at neighbourhood level take a central position. They are all examples of initiatives that contribute to the transition to a circular economy. For the analysis of these different circular initiatives, the researchers – urban designer Els Leclercq and architect Mo Smit - developed a unique method: the Circular Value Flower method. This method helps to organize the collective closing of resource cycles (bio and tech materials, energy, water and nutrients) on a neighbourhood scale and provides insight into the added value (social, ecological, aesthetic, cultural and economic) that can be realized within the built environment. Circular Communities offers inspiration and lessons for integral sustainable interventions at the scale of the neighbourhood and ties in with the new Dutch Environmental Planning Act, which explicitly offers room for citizen initiatives and local commissioning in the Netherlands.

Vesna Krmelj se je v svoji študiji o Cukrarni poglobila v vse plasti te simbolne zgradbe. Čeprav trenutno stanje spomenika kaže na globoko nerazumevanje njegovega pomena, neupoštevanje zakonske zaščite in pogubne posledice vztrajanja pri starih, nepremišljenih urbanističnih idejah, je Cukrarno tudi z vpogledom te knjižice še mogoče in hkrati nujno rešiti ter vsaj delno obnoviti. Stavba kot izjemno kvalitetna klasicistična industrijska arhitektura zgodnjega 19. stoletja ter prostor literarnega delovanja slovenske moderne in sodobnih likovnih umetnikov je priča ljubljanskih gospodarskih in kulturnih presežkov, ki bi se jih Slovenci morali naučiti razumeti, živeti in ohraniti za prihodnje rodove.

Originating from the monumental ensemble of the arcade court of Vienna University, this thematic issue is dedicated to the traditon of academic memorials in a european-wide comparison. The first part of the volume focusses on the monuments of the Vienna University in context of development history and changing cultural and political framework conditions. The second part shows the european perspektive and focusses on the ancient and early modern era origins of the hall of honour, and the the different manifestation in chosen european countries until today. The issue contributes with its diverse methodical articles in a significant way to a discursive discussion on traditon and currency of academic memorials.

This book brings together the proceedings of the study days “Bridges and cities: stories of an urban heritage”, organised in Bordeaux on 12 and 13 May 2022 to mark the bicentenary of the Bordeaux stone bridge. Historians, art historians, architects, urban planners, curators and heritage coordinators will be analysing the “organic relationships” that link the history of cities to their river crossings, through 17 contributions from over 15 cities, mainly in France. This is a field of research that has so far been little explored, and while it will be of interest to a specialist audience, it will also be of interest to the people of Bordeaux, as well as to planners, those responsible for current urban management, and a wider public interested in issues relating to the relationship between cities and their infrastructure.

Climate change adaptation actions are not yet capable of demonstrating the expected level of effectiveness even if, as the IPCC observes, they have significantly increased in number in recent years: the limitation on available resources, the difficulty of involving citizens, the insufficient mobilization of finances, the lack of political leadership and poor awareness are just some of the systemic barriers that slow down their implementation and effectiveness. Consequently, the processes of assimilation of these proposals within territorial management tools are complex and have a medium to long time horizon. In the meantime, the effects of climate change manifest greater frequency and intensity and often materialize in the cities’ outdoor spaces which expose incrementally more vulnerable profiles. Taking as reference the climatic context and the vulnerabilities of the mid-Adriatic coastal city, the volume investigates the possibilities offered by the temporary use of devices, space configurators, urban installations, as tools to support adaptation, with the objective of identifying a set of measures capable of responding quickly to the vulnerability factors of a specific open space, filling a cyclical and continuous time gap for the application of the strategic-programmatic level of planning. Temporary practices - and the tools and technologies necessary to implement them- once again become an object of interest for the qualities that they can obtain in changing the use of today’s and tomorrow’s city spaces, a potential protagonist in supporting health and psychophysical well-being of inhabitants and communities. With respect to increasingly pressing questions that affect the daily life of our cities, this volume offers a methodological contribution for scientific advancement with respect to the proposed field of investigation and also an operational contribution by addressing administrators, professionals and associations involved in design and maintenance of urban spaces.

Der jüngste Bezirk des Kantons bildete einst das Kernland des ehemaligen Fürstbistums Basel und ist bis heute katholisch geprägt. Deswegen liegt ein Fokus auf der Sakralarchitektur und auf den Herrschaftsbauten. Besonders erwähnenswert sind in der Kirchenlandschaft St. Martin in Roggenburg aus dem 13. Jahrhundert mit Fresken aus der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts und St. Katharina in Laufen, erbaut um 1700, mit einer Stuckierung von Andreas Moosbrugger aus der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Schloss Zwingen und Schloss Angenstein haben als mittelalterliche Burganlagen ihre Bedeutung bis zum Ende des Fürstbistums bewahren können. Spektakulär ist die Anlage von Schloss Biederthal in Burg. Die häufig gut erhaltenen Ortsbilder der zwölf Dörfer werden von ländlicher Baukultur und im Bezirkshauptort Laufen von kleinstädtischer Architektur geprägt. Die Industrialisierung des Laufentals hat wertvolle bauliche Zeugen entstehen lassen. Der Fächer an Baugattungen reicht von Infrastrukturbauten für die Eisenbahn und Stromversorgung über Fabrikareale bis zu Direktorenvillen und Arbeiterwohnhäuser.

Der landwirtschaftlich geprägte östliche Teil des Bezirks Schwyz überrascht mit einer erstaunlichen Dichte sakraler Bauwerke. Diese reichen von einfachen Bildstöcken über reizvolle Kapellen bis hin zu bemerkenswerten Pfarrkirchen, wie z. B. die spätbarocke Kirche von Muotathal. Aussen schlicht, beeindruckt sie im Innern durch ihre bauzeitliche Ausstattung, die einen umfangreichen Freskenzyklus sowie lebhafte Rokoko-Stuckaturen umfasst. Im Profanbau stechen die hölzernen, meist in Blockbauweise errichteten Bauernhäuser hervor. Eine regionale Besonderheit bilden die sog. «Bögen», kleine überdachte Bauwerke am Rand des Kirchenbezirks, in denen sich ab dem 16. Jh. die Bevölkerung nach dem Kirchgang für Diskussionen versammelte. Auch die «Schützenbaschis» sind regional verankert, handelt es sich doch um hölzerne Figuren des hl. Sebastian, des Patrons der jeweiligen Schützenbruderschaft.

The book presents different perspectives of analysis and new models of experience, reconfirming the importance assigned to the wellbeing and human-centered approach in the contemporary spatial design disciplinary debate. The focus on “engaging spaces” is due to the increase of participatory experiences in the design strategies supporting designers who want create tailor made environment to feel people more conscious of the great value of social relations. The title of the book anticipates the aim to explore the transformation process which we are living, both in private and in public spaces, underlining the central role of design to define new qualities of connections to live together in relation with the space around us. The volume is divided into two parts described below. The first, “Social design for engaging spaces”, explores private and public space case studies introducing new hybrid dimensions through the social engagement in “living communities” and reports participatory design approaches in the transformation processes of shared common spaces, such as schools, intended as incubators of social practices. The second, “Experience design for engaging spaces”, describes more in-depth the experience of human beings in relation to physical and emotional aspects of space, focusing on the quality of the built environment that deeply affects people’s wellbeing, social interaction, and cohesion, and investigating ephemeral practices and projects to experience design through a conscious sensorial approach. The pandemic and the return to a “post-pandemic new normal” have led us to further reflect on the spatial processes of transformation and hybridization and their shared use in both the private and public spheres, exploring the importance of participatory and engaging strategies in the different phases of the design process with the aim to increase social awareness. Being back to the physical perception of spaces has confirmed the importance of evaluating the project’s sensorial aspects with a new awareness. This novel attitude leads to rediscovering the values of measurable space in the constant confrontation with the virtual perspective that triumphed during the pandemic, introducing the “time” factor in the design discipline even with a broader complexity than before.

This is the first time that 92-metre marble frieze of the Voortrekker Monument, showing Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior (1835-52), has been the subject of a monograph. The visual narrative is a key work that represented a crucial period of South Africa’s past. And it contributed to the country’s socio-political mores in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. It is also unique in providing rare evidence of the processes of creating a major monument, discoverable in unpublished documents, drawings and models, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze through all stages of its design, modelling and sculpting. The book traces these complex processes and those who contributed to them, and analyses the reliefs selected to represent the ‘Great Trek’. It explains how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount and the style in which it is depicted. It investigates the active role the Monument played in the development of apartheid, and its post-apartheid heritage. The book’s second volume expands on the first, considering each of the twenty-seven scenes in depth, providing new insights into the frieze and little explored aspects of South Africa’s history.

The following publication shows selected projects from the Research Unit Building Construction and Design 1, which were assigned as part of the course Design and Construction. An explanation of the methodology of simultaneous design serves as the introduction to this publication. The teaching material and assignments in the Research Unit Building Construction and Design 1 focus on the important connection between construction and architectural form. The goal of this project assignment was to create a construct in which concepts of space and form combine with spatial and constructive logic to create expressive architecture. In closing, the publication includes didactic reflection on, presentation and graphic depiction of workflow processes. The product of a research trip during the Winter semester 2018/19, „Kraków / Musical Score“ applied these methods to plan interventions in Kraków, the European Capital of Culture in 2000, all of which are dedicated to the theme of music. The various themes and typologies change rhythmically and find their architectonic and constructive expression in music schools, concert halls, musical theatres and other musical venues, which serve the city with a rich palette of expressive sound spaces.

The first volume comprises a series of critical reflections on Albanian monumentality of the period 1945–1990 from a variety of perspectives, as well as historical documents and a full indexation of all inscriptions found on the documented monuments. The newly discovered original plans, published for the first time in 2019, allow a new view at Leberecht Migge as a garden architect who is still relevant today. Avec ses collines et son coteau, Sierre jouit d’une situation et de conditions climatiques favorables à l’occupation humaine dès la préhistoire. Le patrimoine architectural de la ville actuelle s’enorgueillit d’une brochette d’édifices religieux répartis sur plusieurs sites et dont l’histoire s’échelonne de la basse antiquité à nos jours. Les manoirs et autres demeures élevés sous l’Ancien Régime témoignent du statut social et des moyens dont disposaient les principales familles de Sierre. L’ancienne bourgade était alignée sur l’axe de circulation du Valais, la route royale, flanquée au nord de quartiers à dominante rurale. L’urbanisme moderne de Sierre est le corollaire d’un essor économique et démographique suscité par l’industrie de l’aluminium installée au début du XXe siècle dans la commune voisine de Chippis. Cette dernière, qui est également intégrée au présent volume, a été urbanisée en même temps que Sierre et renferme le site récemment réhabilité du château de Beauregard.

La ville de Sion est dominée par deux collines qui marquent le paysage de leurs majestueuses silhouettes. Sur l’une d’elles se découpe le château de Tourbillon, sur l’autre, le site fortifié de Valère, un bourg capitulaire et ses maisons de chanoines, coiffé par son église édifiée dès le XIIe siècle. Si la plupart des bâtiments ne sont plus guère réparés dès le XVIIIe siècle, l’église, lieu de pèlerinage important, continue à être entretenue. À la fin du XIXe siècle, le site suscite une vaste campagne de restauration et un musée archéologique voit le jour en 1883. Le long chantier de restauration achevé en 2022 marque un pas important pour la connaissance historique, archéologique et artistique de Valère que ce livre restitue dans son ensemble. La publication met en lumière d’innombrables trésors emblématiques, tels les sculptures romanes, peintures médiévales et autels baroques ou le célèbre orgue.

Adaptivity of the urban open spaces to face the climatic, socio-ecological, multicultural and health challenges, raises questions with multiple design implications, which cannot be solved only with the functional, formal, and technical rethinking of the space. A real adaptivity of the urban open spaces can only result from an informational redirection of the project aimed at raising the integrated capabilities of nature, individuals, organizations, and spaces. This is an interpretation of designing that involves a substantial rethinking of scenarios, visions, and concepts, in terms of plural projection of multiple, flexible, and reversible responses. It is also a new condition of the design experience that can only develop through an interdisciplinary and choral practice, based on comparison and continuous dialogue between different design knowledge and living cultures. This volume collects the results of the Mediterranean Urban Campus for Regeneration project, that was selected by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs among the initiatives carried out at the Italy Pavilion of Expo 2020 in Dubai. All the activities were conducted by an international universitarian team of professors, researchers, and PhD students. Today, the metropolis of Dubai is characterized by an extreme climatic-environmental conditions and, at the same time, by an almost infinite capacity to regulate the living spaces through the most innovative technologies. The theme of adaptive design of open urban spaces has been contextualized in some case-study areas of Dubai. The results of the metadesign, debate, workshop and comparison process between the participants outlined a complex framework of different development trajectories, both for the designing innovation of the urban open spaces, and for the launch of new teaching methods of architectural, technological, and urban project. This experience has made it possible to identify issues, approaches, and design criteria – on urban and building scale – potentially replicable also in the Mediterranean contexts that are today affected by an exacerbation of climatic phenomena, such as the rise in temperatures and the consequent need to overturn the consolidates axioms and design practices. For these reasons, the experience of the Mediterranean Urban Campus for Regeneration can represent a useful anticipation of operating methods to be transferred on the Italian urban territories. Reflecting on these issues means understanding how the university research can take an active role in the development of studies and scenarios to support the operational actions at the land and local level.

Market halls at the intersection of civic order and public health Markets and market hallshave always been more than about trade and nourishment. A detailed look at the histories of marketplaces provides evidence of the public health concerns they faced, as well as the social commotion, mobilization and, at times, unrest they hosted. This edited volume reappraises the market hall, examining both its architectural and its social and political significance. Focusing on how these buildings embodied transformations in architecture and urbanism from the mid-nineteenth century until the age of COVID-19, Mobs and Microbes situates market halls at the intersection of civic order and public health. Central to this are advances in sanitation and hygiene. These radical interventions also mediated conflicting interests. Through their rational designs, market halls intertwined government policies and regulations, which formalized, controlled and literally imposed order. The unification of the arts in the "Gesamtkunstwerk" of courtly opera has repeatedly been the subject of musicological research, but so far, for example, the specific spatial-architectural side of courtly opera has hardly been considered. Music theater means scenic performance and architecture alike. Both formed essential components of lordly representation in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the Old Kingdom, therefore, not only the aristocratic nobility arranged music-theatrical performances, but smaller courts also brought ballets and operas on stage. The interdisciplinary contributions of a conference of the Rudolstädter Arbeitskreis zur Residenzkultur deal with the topic in a European perspective and explain the diverse connections that existed between the music theater and the courtly space in the architectural, political-cultural and social sense.

Since the Industrial Revolution, cities and industry have grown together; towns and metropolitan regions have evolved around factories and expanding industries. New Industrial Urbanism explores the evolving and future relationships between cities and places of production, focusing on the spatial implications and physical design of integrating contemporary manufacturing into the city. This book deals with re-manufacturing, recondition, reuse and repurpose considered as winning strategies for boosting regenerative circular economy in the building sector. It presents many of the outcomes of the research Re-NetTA (Re-manufacturing Networks for Tertiary Architectures). New organisational models and tools for re-manufacturing and re-using short life components coming from tertiary buildings renewal, funded in Italy by Fondazione Cariplo for the period 2019-2021. The field of interest of the book is the building sector, focusing on various categories of tertiary buildings, characterized by short term cycles of use. The book investigates the most promising strategies and organizational models to maintain over time the value of the environmental and economic resources integrated into manufactured products, once they have been removed from buildings, by extending their useful life and their usability with the lower possible consumption of other materials and energy and with the maximum containment of emissions into the environment. The text is articulated into three sections. Part I BACKGROUND introduces the current theoretical background and identifies key strategies about circular economy and re-manufacturing processes within the building sector, focusing on tertiary architectures. It is divided into three chapters. Part II PROMISING MODELS outlines, according to a proposed framework, a set of promising circular organizational models to facilitate re-manufacturing practices and their application to the different categories of the tertiary sectors: exhibition, office and retail. This part also reports the results of active dialogues and roundtables with several categories of operators, adopting a stakeholder perspective. Part III INSIGHTS provides some insights on the issue of re-manufacturing, analyzed from different perspectives with the aim of outlining a comprehensive overview of challenges and opportunities for the application of virtuous circular processes within building sector. The Dutch Police is one of the largest owners of public real estate in the Netherlands. From police station to forensic laboratory, from listed buildings in the centre of The Hague to large-scale facilities next to the motorway in Driebergen: the task of accommodating the Police is as diverse as it is challenging. Themes such as innovation and sustainability, health and safety, as well as identity, flexibility and affordability are all of relevance for the Police's accommodation strategy. Efforts are being made to strike a new balance between the physical, mobile and digital workplace. Since the formation of the National Police, there has been an enormous challenge to accommodate the organization. In realizing this task, the police has the ambition to raise the quality of police buildings as well as the experience users have in the buildings. At the same time, the police is at the heart of an ever changing society: The accommodation needs to meet the requirements posed by several developments such as the energy transition, climate change and digitization. Na podlagi dostopnih virov nam avtor pronicljivo razkriva zgodbo natečaja za spomenik in nastajanja te moderne javne plastike ter njen ikonografski okvir. V obdobjih, kot so bila 60. leta in kot je današnji čas, je takšnim naročilom le redko mogoče prerasti ideološke meje in nagovoriti predvsem s svojo izvirno likovno kvaliteto. Tršarjev spomenik revolucije, ki je našel svoj prostor v zavetju dreves na nekdanjem uršulinskem vrtu, je eden takšnih.

When a fire department called "Ostwache" in the eastern part of Leipzig closed down, it left their old building behind vacant. Soon after a neighbourhood initiative sought to use the space to establish a community center for the surrounding neighbourhood. At the same time, the municipal government was planning a new school on the same lot. This thesis presents a solution for this conflict. By bringing together architectural, urban planning and pedagogical perspectives, while aiming for synergies. Following the model of Freinet pedagogy, a community school was planned with a new building at the site of the old fire station and the community center is to be located in the existing building of the old Ostwache. Through a common courtyard, shared work and sports facilities and a shared lunch, the school opens up to the city and its neighborhood to the school. This is how city works as school and a school works as city.

In this survey, the development of the public concert life in Tokyo from the beginning of the Meiji Era in 1868 to the end of the Second World War is examined, based on an analysis of performance venues for symphonic concerts. It will be shown that the analysis of the architectural and acoustic conditions of performance and reception of symphonic music contribute to the understanding of the social and cultural conditions of the time. The specific preconditions as well as apparent references to European or American prototypes regarding the performance venues will be identified. This survey intends to document all venues that have been used for symphonic concerts before 1945 in Tokyo, regarding their form, size, capacity and acoustics. For the investigation of the acoustic conditions, a set of room acoustic parameters are employed. Since most of the relevant rooms do not exist anymore in their original condition, CAD models are generated as input for a room acoustics simulation software to derive the room acoustic parameters for the unoccupied and the occupied cases. The size of the orchestras are investigated based on historical sources to describe the relationship of sound source, enclosure and audience.

Empires stretched around the world, but also made their presence felt in architecture and urban landscapes. The Architecture of Empire in Modern Europe traces the entanglement of the European built environment with overseas imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As part of imperial networks between metropole and colonies, in cities as diverse as Glasgow, Hamburg, or Paris, numerous new buildings were erected such as factories, mission houses, offices, and museums. These sites developed into the physical manifestations of imperial networks. As Europeans designed, used, and portrayed them, these buildings became meaningful imperial places that conveyed the power relations of empire and Eurocentric self-images. Engaging with recent debates about colonial history and heritage, this book combines a variety of sources, an interdisciplinary approach, and an international scope to produce a cultural history of European imperial architecture across borders.

Forgotten chapter in early 20th-century European planning history, offering a fresh perspective on urbanism, grounded in a theory of urbanization The Art of Urbanization reexamines a forgotten tradition in Belgian and European planning history, reconstructed through a longitudinal analysis of the Study Committee of the Antwerp Agglomeration (1907-1939). The Covert Life of Hospital Architecture addresses hospital architecture as a set of interlocked, overlapping spatial and social conditions. It identifies ways that planned-for and latent functions of hospital spaces work jointly to produce desired outcomes such as greater patient safety, increased scope for care provider communication and more intelligible corridors. By advancing space syntax theory and methods, the volume brings together emerging research on hospital environments. Opening with a description of hospital architecture that emphasizes everyday relations, the sequence of chapters takes an unusually comprehensive view that pairs spaces and occupants in hospitals: the patient room and its intervisibility with adjacent spaces, care teams and on-ward support for, and the intelligibility of public circulation spaces for visitors. As the direct successor to the International Military Tribunal of Nuremberg in 1945-1946, this UN tribunal concluded 25 years of unprecedented success in investigating and trying all major war crimes suspects from the wars in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. It also made history through the first application of the UN Genocide Convention in the trial of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. This report addresses the question of how the significance of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, as a heritage and memorial site for its many (inter)national stakeholders, can be preserved following the withdrawal of the UN and a possible redevelopment of the site.

"Vita di un monumento" traces the processes of transformation that engaged the so-called Nymphaeum of Egeria in the Caffarella Valley in Rome. The volume begins with the analysis of the historical, geographical, and archaeological background before moving onto an examination of the monument in its current form, from its construction to its reuse and refunctionalisation over time. The text organizes the current documentation and draws attention to the features of the building. After tracing the historical, architectural, and functional development, it highlights the contribution of various virtual representation and reconstruction methodologies and approaches targeted at a thorough study of the Nymphaeum itself. This development aims to portray the process of surveying, developing, and combining heterogeneous data into two- and three-dimensional models, capable of providing a critical interpretation of the monument and facilitating multidisciplinary research. The volume concludes with a selection of the most important graphic representations of the Nymphaeum, dating from the first records to the end of the 19th century. Following the issues discussed within the book, the plates integrate historical and archaeological issues ¬– related to the study of sources of human past – with questions of representation as a tool for knowledge.
